I live in the middle of a redwood forest with state park on two sides and
large parcels on the other two sides. Deer and wild pigs everywhere. I
tried using lion urine and replaced the tags every couple of days, the deer
ate down to tags.I had tied them to the iris flower stalks, so no more
flowers. Then for an entire summer my husband and I slept in the garden in
the middle of the strawberry patch hoping our physical presence would keep
them out of garden. It worked for awhile then they caught on that we were
no threat. More than once I woke to a deer eating inches from my head.
Human urine doesn't work either. My husband borrowed a pellet gun thinking
that if he got one the problem would be over. It didn't work. He couldn't
hit a deer and the noise would send them running 4 or 5 feet behind a
skinny tree only to come out when we tried to go back to sleep. The dog
worked for a while until it cornered a big buck and the buck attacked with
antlers and hooves. Finally we put up an 8 foot fence with 4 feet of hog
wire around the bottom. We trenched in the hog wire and rolled redwood logs
around the bottom wiring them to the to posts. The wild pigs hit hard once
and destroyed the entire garden along with all the 5 year old apple and
pear trees so the hog protection was vital. The garden in 1 1/2 acres so
you don't feel closed in by the fence and it is really worth it.
Anyway good luck with your deer protection
