My long and somewhat technical essay on my breeding plans (which I have
already been forced to publicize twice, quite contrary to my humble nature)
is now finished and posted on the web. It's called "Big Ideas for Little
Irises" and you can find it on my gardening page at
http://www.rt66.com/~telp/garden.htm.
Here's a very brief precis, so you can decide whether it would be of
interest to read:
Among aril and bearded irises, there are three true tetraploid families
(crudely TBs, I. pumila, and tet. arils) and three amphidiploid families
(crudely SDBs, arilbred halfbreds, and aril/pumila hybrids). Some of these
have been hybridized more extensively than others, but even in the
well-developed families there remains fundamental work to be done in
bringing in characteristics from species that were not much used in the
historic breeding of the families.
In particular (as I posted earlier), I think there is tremendous potential
in expanding the 48-chromosome family (which includes the TBs and BBs) into
the dwarf and median classes. The family of aril/pumila hybrids also cries
out for serious breeding work.
Happy irising, Tom.
