I. setosa, a wide ranging species native to North America, can't remember
if it is circumpolar. It is found (so I hear) from the Aleutians to Eastern
US among other places I'm sure. The form varies as well. I like the short
strains generally refered to as I. setosa canadensis, they seem to be
inbred so they stay short outside their native area. Very lovely short
garden plants. Pictures are in the AIS Native Iris Brochure (I got one when
I joined).
