A book covering aril/arilbred irises is itching to be written, but has not
been to my knowledge. There are excellent chapters in the World of Iris
and Kohlein's Iris book, as well as brief sections in a number of others,
but a definitive text has yet to be written, unless there is one in
progress now. Sharon McAllister and Tom Little are both professional
technical writers and they may know of someone in the process of putting
such a book together???? A major source of information about
arils/arilbreds are the yearbooks published by Aril Society International,
a cooperating society of the American Iris Society. This is a relatively
small group of aril/arilbred enthusiasts, founded in California in the
1950's, which has put out yearbooks since 1958. Many of the back issues
are available either as originals or photocopies. Both Sharon and Tom
have had major roles in the Aril Society for many years, and Tom is the
current yearbook editor. Everyone interested in aril-type irises is
encouraged to join the Aril Society. American Iris Society membership is
not a prerequisite as it is for other AIS sections. Another major benefit
of membership is the annual Plant Sale, which is the best single source
of arils/arilbreds available. Most aril/bred hybridizers including
a major source in Israel make plants available through this sale which is
only available to members. Membership is $10 annual and $28 triennial,
the latter (new memberships) receiving a $10 coupon for the plant sale.
Membership Secretary is Barbara Figge, 6805 Kentucky Ct., NE, Albuquerque,
NM, 87110; 505-881-3859. Of course the above is a semi-blatant
advertisement, but what did Clarence say about the way business is
conducted in the USA......
