Hi, folks:
Paul Black, the outstanding hybridizer from Oklahoma City, was the
speaker/presenter (slide show) at our Chesapeake and Potomac Iris
Society spring luncheon today. Besides being captivated by the beauty of
his creations, we were particularly appreciative of the way he presented
them. He first provided a run-through of many different types of bearded
irises, with commentary on the developments in form and color, then
moved on to his own seedlings, the appearance of each of which was
preceded by photos of its parents and an explanation of why he made the
cross. The presentation was not heavy on technicalities, but was rich in
information, and entertaining to hybridizers and non-hybridizers alike.
Several lucky raffle-ticket buyers won rhizomes of some of his 1997
introductions. FLYING CARPET is a beauty (medium yellow stands and rich
fuschia-violet falls)! And his 1996 introduction TOM JOHNSON is a
stunning black-purple bi-tone with white-tipped orange beards. The
photos in his Mid-America Garden catalogue are gorgeous, and not the
hyped colors too often seen in some commercial offerings.
This comes just 2 weeks after our own Don and Ginny Spoon put on our
reblooming iris slide show, followed by a slide exposition of many of
their own seedlings, including beautiful introductions (pink LITTLE JOHN
and pink/lavender MY JODIE, particularly), and distributed the extensive
list of offerings from their own newly-established Winterberry Gardens
in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
It's been like having Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners one after the
other (burp!)
