On March 11, 1997, Brian Efford had the following tantrum:
Hi,
I guess you all aren't up on the technology/etiquette of mailing
lists. Messages like this one (sorry John!) are clearly being posted
UNECESSARILY as I am sure not all hundred odd want to know of your
personal welcome to this member. A personal reply is far more
considerate to the rest of the WORLD trying to use this communication
tool. As a visitor to my parents house and an avid computer freak I am
amazed at some of the.....stuff people post and therefore deliver to
hundreds of people.
As I have argued with Ian, this mailing list is flawed from the start
as it is NOT an appropriate use of a mailing list, IT IS A NEWSGROUP!!!
Messages are posted ONCE in newsgroups and read by all at your leasure
as you browse the postings. Replies are threaded to maintain context.
I have no wish to "rain on your collective parade". Sorry if I have
offended, I wish only to enlighten!
Save the Net!,
Brian C. Efford
Sir, I am sorry if you don't like new people to introduce themselves.
It is suggested in the "about the list" files on the web page. I
suggest you read them. Particularly the part about being POLITE.
Airing your own particular views of what a mail list is for is not
an appropriate use of the list, either. So, if you are all as snotty
as this fellow, I will unsubscribe and save myself the bother of
getting flamed for my innocent quest for information.
I belong to several mail lists, and don't offen contribute. If I go
a long while and see nothing of use, I unsubscribe. I sent this
reply to the list rather than the offensive person alone because he
posted his tantrum to the whole list. Be assured that I do not stay
where I am not welcome.
