BACK IN THE SADDLE AGAIN

Hello gentle iris folks:

I've come crawling back to the iris fray and can't wait to read what's been
proposed, resolved, postulated, queried, and pronounced since I've been gone
in mid-December.

I have just come off of a four-day gig in Rochester, NY.. helping to
man/woman an educational booth on the Iris Society, Daylily Society and Hosta
Society. One hope in this venture is that we can find enough interest in
this area to resurrect a defunct club so that the iris lovers in that part of
the state can get 'stimulated'. As a means to do that, we offered a drawing
for a free plant to anyone who filled out a card with their name & address.
We thought we could create a database mailing list.... well, I've got over
1,000 cards so that's become a NEW problem now (first of all, to enter all
those names in our 'free time'.... and then second, to find a device to weed
out the folks who just want the free plant). Needs to be re-thought before
our next gig in mid-April.

Don and Donna Lowry did a program on "Iris; Goddess of the Rainbow and a
Beautiful Flower Too". Unfortunately, the program fell during a Sunday
morning snowstorm, but they still had good attendance and an interested
audience.

Working for 4 days at a booth, you begin to hear the same questions over and
over... and so one has to understand that these are things folks want to know
and we need to provide information accordingly:

Why don't my iris bloom?
Why did my entire new iris order rot?
How do you divide bearded iris?
How can I improve the bloom season?
What iris is suited to my (pick one) shady, wet, poor soil, woodland garden?
Where can I get reliable iris?

We had fun... we did some good (I think)... and maybe we generated enough
interest to get a club rolling.

Kathyguest.... who missed her iris friends and hopes to be able to keep up
now.
E. Aurora, NY... outside of Buffalo - in the snowbelt!
