Vernon,
It sounds to me like damage caused by the weather. That has happened
here when the Irises were well advanced, then a cold snap came. Several
years ago, after sufficient warmth allowed the Iris leaves to reach about a
foot tall, the temperature dropped to 8 degrees. The damage was extensive,
resulting in my poorest bloom season ever.
