Does anybody know why it is not in the 1996 cumulative checklist
of Japanese irises? Or, am I having such a bad day that I just don't
see it? :-))

No Japanese iris named HENRY'S WHITE has ever been registered with AIS or
reported to AIS registrar as introduced. Somebody just slapped this name on
some iris and started selling it. There are many spectacularly beautiful
registered white Japanese irises---singles, doubles and multipetals.
There are two comments I would make about such an iris. First, since it is
not registered there is no assurance that an iris sold under that name is the
same as some other iris sold under that name.
Second, notwithstanding that Anner thinks the cultivar she grows under this
name is lovely, (and I propably would too), the odds favor that there is some
iris that looks just like it which is registered and properly introduced.
Reputable perennial nurseries are supposed to abide by the international
rules governing proper registration of perennials---and that means they are
not supposed to be selling iris cultivars that are not properly registered.
These rules exist to protect the consumer.
When Wayside Gardens sold unregistered Japanese irises a few years ago, I
told them about it and they stopped. When a large nursery in Ohio was told
the same thing, they ignored the letter (several letters in fact) and
continue to sell unregistered irises which are, frankly, junk. Clarence
