Another factor to consider in when to divide Siberians is how big of a "knot"
you want to let them make.  On the ones I've grown for 3-5 years, I've never
had trouble pulling them apart, but some more-established clumps have
been a challenge, and lots of growers have stories about prying them apart
with pitchforks or pickup trucks, etc.  Of course, I suppose you can always
settle for cutting through them.   Vigor is certainly a factor in how quickly
they reach that point.  Also, I heard Julius Wadekamper say once that one
reason that certain varieties are good large-scale commercial varieties is
because their root structure is such that they divide well.  He gave Lady
Vanessa as an example of a Siberian that divides relatively easily.  --Jim
