Re: HIST: good cultivars for humid climes?

I planted both CRIMSON KING and ELEANOR ROOSEVELT last summer. Eleanor
had several bloomstalks in the fall and sent up my first bloomstalk of the
spring a week ago. Crimson King has also sent up a bloomstalk already
this spring. Both appeared before any SDB bloomstalks. The description
of your climate sounded like it could be Richmond, VA.
The two best growing historics so far in my yard are INDIAN CHIEF (Ayres
1929) and WILLIAM A. SETCHELL (Brehm 1938), which is listed in the 1939
checklist incorrectly as a white iris, but corrected in the 1949
checklist. Both are vigorous and long blooming. W.A.S. is a very large
(8" long) purple flower which shows up great from a distance and is
currently my favorite iris.
INDIAN CHIEF and ALTA CALIFORNIA (Mohr-Mitchell 1931) were in the yard
when I moved here about 20 yrs ago. Both survived many years of
"non-gardeners" neglect. My house was built in 1910. It's possible that
INDIAN CHIEF and ALTA CALIFORNIA have been in my yard since the 1930's.
I have many other historics which are too new to tell how they will do in
my yard.
