I thought the list might enjoy this posting from Marilyn Harlow. I sent her
the nice things said about Bill Maryott's SDB, and this is her response to me
(I have permission to post)
-----------
Dear Kathy, Well, now you know where I was yesterday. I had asked
Superstition
to keep us posted on their SDB bloom season so when Rick and Roger let us
know
it was about ten days ahead of schedule, we decided we needed a day off
before
our hectic season starts, and away we went. Superstition Gardens has been in
Cathey's Valley for seven years now, and all the loving work and dedication
to
iris shows greatly. I only wish I could transport everyone instantly to see
this great completely weed free garden, situated in a country setting. They
have sufficient land to be able to rotate the iris crop and it shows in the
rows
of beautiful foliaged plants. They tried solarization of some of their
planting
areas and that seems to have done a good job too. The SDBs were fabulous. A
beautiful sight to see after the disappointing blossoming of our SDBs. I
hasten
to say we simply do not have enough cold weather in San Jose to provide the
chilling factor evidently direly needed by the SDBs. We have many blooms
down
at the base of the foliage, so impossible to do any evaluation. The only two
performing where they should be are PITTER PATTER and RUBY TUESDAY. The
weather
was great on Wednesday, just right for doing what we all love to do the most.
Visit old friends and see iris at the same time. Not to mention that red and
yellow tulips, purple dutch iris and white PCNs were blooming too!! Yep, it
was
a super day. Now back to work!
