I suspect that Iris pseudocorus will survive a wide range of conditions
and grow well in most of them. It has an extensive range in Europe,
where it originated, and has spread throughout North America except in
the drier regions. It is found from Canada to North Florida, where it
grows to between 6-8ft (see the botanic garden in Gainesville).
Remember, it is considered an invasive species and might spread into the
wild where it could crowd out native species. The seeds are large and
float. for this reason, it is best not to plant it in a natural
waterway but to keep it in an enclosed pond. I cannot find any evidence
that it is really invasive - that is a serious threat to native plants -
although there is one small nature reserve in Eastern British Columbia
where it appears to be doing this.
