I guess it depends on the climate, the soil, and the particular iris
being grown. I would lose heaps of water to evaporation if I didn't
mulch, and I use around 4" of shredded and composted eucalypt bark,
which is very acid, so I add lime to each plant. The soil doesn't stay
wet as the raised beds and light soil drain off the excess.
I also take the precaution of keeping the musch pulled back a bit from
each rhizome.
Like Sonya in N.Z. we have had extremely hot days. At least 2 were over
40deg. C. with drying winds.
