Iris books

With word on the list about the new iris book being published this month,
some of you might be wondering about the status of my own book project.

With the kind help of Mike Lowe, I've just finished reading the proofs of
the book and they have been returned to the publisher, Taunton Press
(publishers of FINE GARDENING magazine). I was very happy with the
appearance of the book and the included pictures and now am looking forward
to seeing it bound and on glossy paper.

I understand that the target date for actually producing the book is now
July or August of this year. The book will be hard bound in a fairly large
format and 170 pages long; there are around 160 color photographs,
including some short photo-essays on how-to-do-it, like using the "pie-cut"
method to divide and replant Siberian Irises. We think the price will be
less than $30, or close to $30.

My book might not necessarily appeal to knowledgable irisarians, because I
wrote it with the beginner in mind. While I did delve into the literature,
most of it comes from my own 40 years or so experience growing irises of
all types. I tried to keep the text practical, so there is little in it
that doesn't directly concern the actual gardening process. Recognizing
that, Taunton has titled it THE GARDENER'S IRIS BOOK.

Now of course if you have money for only one iris book in your budget this
year, I'm encouraging you to wait until August and give me a chance to
convince you that my book is the one you want!
