Well finally got the information Linda. This recipe is for a compost that
is ready to use in 7 days. I don't know how well it will work made in small
amounts, our compost pile was about 20 feet square and 8 feet high. And it
needs to be turned every two days so it will have plenty of oxygen.
The way we mixed it was: 1. 49% horse manure
2. 49% wheat straw
3. 2% nitrogen (from
chicken manure or
chemical)
4. gypsum or lime used to
control nitrogen
level, very important
not to exceed 2%
to 2.5% nitrogen.
5. and last, lots and
lots of water. The way we
measured the water
content was by feel. If
we picked up a hand
full of compost and
squeezed it, if it
had a steady drip of water
coming from it then
it was okay. If the water
ran out of it in a
stream then it was too wet.
And of course, if
none came out it was too
dry and needed more
water.
The inside temps of this compost would reach 140 - 160 degrees and looked
and felt like soil. The compost when done (properly) had no manure odor.
We would check the mostiure and nitrogen contents several times a day. For
us to have this compost ready in 7 days was almost a full time job in
itself. It required almost constant attention.
If I can be of anymore help on this be sure to let me know and I will do
what I can.
