OT-BIO: Norm Everhart

Hi Norm,
Are you enjoying all this gorgeous 60 degree weather? Nice to see a neighbor
(geographically speaking) on the list. I live in Seattle, in the Central Area.
Like you, I used to call irises a "hobby"....now I call it a "sickness". I
heard that they are close to finding a vaccine for it though.
Do I know you? Your name seems vaguely familiar. Are you a member of the King
County Iris Society? If not, it is our local iris club and we meet the first
Monday of each month at the Center for Urban Horticulture on the UW campus.
Terry Aitken was the speaker last Monday. It was a great program, he spoke on
reblooming irises. We also sponsor two shows a year and have two rhizome sales
not to mention pot lucks and garden tours etc. etc. Come visit...come join.
Living in Bothell, you live close to Jean Witt, our Grand Dame of Iris. She
is very knowledgeable about so many areas about iris, hybridizing, history,
etc. Mainly, she seems focused in the Miniature Tall Bearded area. If you
don't know her yet, you should definitely make it a point to visit her garden
and get to know her. She just had another hip replacement operation so is
recuperating at the moment but she will probably be romping through the
gardens soon. With so many replacement operations we are going to start
calling her Bionic Jean.
Your bio sounds like MY bio, I am very interested in the SA irises and have
been playing with them for about as long as you. My old roommate called it
"rape", he would wake in the mornings to find me standing in the garden with
tweezer in hand, petals everywhere and a guilty look on my face. Ha Ha! I work
mainly with the medians and dwarfs. You should show your seedlings at our
shows, they are coming up next month. It's a great place to get critique on
your babies. I am hoping to show some of mine this year. FUN!
