I have to jump in on this thread.
We have a digital camera at work and while it is ok for taking pictures of
plans/blueprints it leaves a lot to be desired when trying to take pictures of
people or anything with color (like flowers). It has a definite yellow cast
to it, colors are nowhere near "true" and it is just not as clear as a real
photograph. This is in the $400.00 range of camera. I also agree that it
will be a long while before it matches anything an SLR can do.
Now it was asked what do you do if you don't have a scanner. The cost of a
digital camera $400 is about twice the price of a good scanner now days. So
don't buy a camera buy a scanner then you will be able to scanner your iris as
well as text that you may want to put with your iris. I have had a scanner
for about 6 years (back when they cost $1000) and I use it all the time.
Just another opinion about the subject.
