Andy,
Janet & Shan's "little purple things" are more likely to be Iris
reticulata. Here in Utah, I. reticulata 'Harmony' opened its first blossoms
today. Usually I. danfordiae beats it by a couple of days, but this year
'Harmony' came first, though danfordiae may be open by this afternoon. We
must have gotten more snow from this last series of storms than in Montana,
as the main iris beds are still covered with 6 to 8 inches of the stuff,
although the temperatures have been getting up into the low 50's for the
past four days and quite a bit has melted away.

I heard the first cranes flying overhead this morning, so spring must
really be on the way.
