John,
The most obvious candidate that comes to mind to bridge the gap between the
dwarf bulbous iris and the MDBs is the Juno group of iris. I. bucharica
flourishes here in conditions that are probably quite comparable to yours.
Admittedly, bucharica does not bloom too far ahead of the first MDBs,
beating them by less than a week here the past two years.
