Maureen suggested that I might comment on which species bloom between
the
danfordiae/reticulatas and the MDBs. Jeff suggested I. bucharica. He
said that bucharica does not bloom too far ahead of the first MDBs,
beating them by less than a week.
I still do not have a wide enough range of species that flower to
comment accurately on this question. Furthermore, last year we were
re-building the house and my flowering records were abandoned. Thus,
with insufficient information, my experience is the following.
In this climate, danfordiae generally flowers every week of April and
reticulata about the same although it can be one week later, depending
on the cultivar. Thus, Pauline flowered into the first week of May. I
then have a dwarf bearded of unknown name which flower during the whole
of May. That is the only other iris that flowers in the first two weeks
of May. I.bucharica begins about the third week of May along with a
large number of dwarfs (such as Knickknack, Consummation, and Ritz),
some medians (such as Honey Melon, Circlette), and I. reichenbachii.
Last year I.magnifica flowered magnificantly for the first time but I
have no record of the date, although I believe it was later than
bucharica.
At the moment, a new snow storn has arrive but, in the house, bucharica
is very slowly appearing from the soil. About an inch in three or four
weeks. I check every day, which is probably the reason it is taking so
long!
