Zelma,
I use venetian blind slats (the metal ones). Cut them into suiteable
lengths and then write the names WITH A PAINT PEN. I find that normal
marker pens fade, but pain pens (the ones that have the ball inside them
when you shake them) put a layer of writing on which takes a LOT longer to
fade. I don't know if you have a recycling centre at your local tip (i.e
useful stuff that has been dumped at the tip is sold cheaply to people who
want it) but if you do then you can easily get a venetian blind for this
purpose for a couple of bucks.
I hope this is of some use (and makes sense).
