Dana,
You should let the mulch age first. The processes involved are a
little complicated, but the result of putting the fresh "raw" mulch in the
garden is that it will temporarily rob the soil of Nitrogen. That is bad
news for the plants. Let it age during the spring and summer. By fall, it
will be suitable to use as mulch.
