Irisers,
Here is what the Winchester Star (our local newspaper and the
newspaper sponsoring the Bee) said of the spelling bee...
"Jessica [Tavenner],...and seecond place winner Ryan Carter, an
eighth grader at Powhatan School in Boyce, [Virginia] completed 34 rounds
before a winner was declared...It took 23 rounds of duelling between
Jessica and Ryan [with everyone else knocked out at that point] before she
emerged victorious. The pair took turns spelling words such as
"concierge(mine)," "entrepreneur(hers)," "dahlia(mine hehehe)," and
"propitious(hers)."...Jessica's victory may be attributed to nerves (not
true)-- she appeared calmer as the bee dragged on while Ryan's foot
twitched more rapidly between each turn.
The styles ofd the two finalists were distinctly different. Ryan,
in a blue sport coat, tan pants, and striped [Woodberry Forest, the prep
school I will attend next year] tie, asked for each word to be repeated,
used in a sentence, and defined. He would then furrow his brow and
carefully weigh each letter."
It goes on to say she wore a Lucky Chams t-shirt and jeans (which appalled
me) and interviews her. I am not angry, because I did as well as I could. I
am now finished with my long tenure in Spelling Bees.
