I've been fortunate enough to be invited to come to the Bay area
at the end of April for a vacation. My friend said what I wanted to
see, other than the usual tourist stuff .... so what gardens are a
must see? And where are they located?

Actually, I'll be staying in the eastern Contra Costa County (?)
area....any suggestions? I'd appreciate any help you can give. I'm
really excited, since this will be iris spotting a full month+ ahead of
my own garden!

Jan, The Bay area will have Iris Shows the weekend of April 25,26 in
San Jose (south bay), Santa Cruz (coast) and in Oakland. The Mt. Diablo
Iris Society will be hosting the Spring Regional on May 2,3 in Walnut
Creek (East Bay).

There are some small backyard growers in the immediate
area, Messick Iris Garden in Walnut Creek accepts visitors (510)
939-7910 for directions. Others such as Roris (Sacramento), Superstition
(you may have heard ;,)) Sutton's (Porterville) Nicholson's Woodland
(Modesto) etc. will be 1-3 hours away from the East bay. The Mt. Diablo
Iris Society meets the 2nd Friday of Each Month at Heather Farm Center,
perhaps you could drop by and get help from the members. One garden in
the Walnut Creek area which is worth seeing ANYTIME is Ruth Bancrofts,
It is open to the PUBLIC with a small fee, in addition to a collection
of historic iris she has created a WORLD CLASS garden featuring
Succulents and Cacti, nothing like it anywhere. If you can and have the
interest the U.C. Berkeley Botanic Gardens at strawberry canyon have an
amazing collection of Mediterranean Plants as well as Rhododendrons,
African Plants and many others.

There are obviously lots of other possibilities - depending on
your interests !
