Sharon,
"Space Age" is the term that Lloyd Austin coined to describe the irises
that he had bred with extra floral parts developed as extensions or
modifcations of the beards. These appendages are variously labeled "horns",
"flounces", and "spoons" depending on the shape they assume. A number of
hybridizers have taken an interest in these irises in recent years and in
1997 one of them, THORNBIRD (Byers, 89), won the Dykes' medal.
