This was one of my new purchases last fall and it started out as the
fastest,
healthiest grower of the whole lot. Unfortunately, this is one of two
which have
just sort of withered last this winter, the other being MOHR PRETENDER
(J. Rich '78). This one also had strong growth after planting. Both are
still
alive, but are looking very marginal. I have easily pulled off some of the

unhealthy looking growth and the rhizome is soft, but not mushy. I'm
hoping
some of increase will survive. Nearly all the other arilbreds look good,
with only a couple not doing so well. However, the others didn't start
very
well either and still don't have that withered appearance. It sure wasn't
caused by excessive moisture, since we haven't had any.

If the weather holds, my first iris bloom will be CELESTE AZUL (Shockey
'75)
as the bud is well out of the fan now and I expect color will show in the
next
few days if it stays this warm. I can't believe we will last until tax day
without
killer freeze and if it occurs, much of my iris bloom will get damaged
since
the growth has progressed this far so early.
