Well, akshally, the preferred word is "historic." It took a lot of passionate
wrangling on the part of the founding HIPSoisie to arrive at that highly
technical term, but having arrived at rare consensus, we cling to it. And
there are "historic" species, too. Some were, and are, important garden plants
in and of themselves, others were the genetic foundations of the hybrids. Some
are both.

<<All kinds of interesting things do pop up when people take the time to
look more deeply into these items. "Joseph's Coat Katkamier" is
registered in 1989 as an MTB and is a sport of "Honorabile".
"Honorabile" is stuck with the IB classification from its 1840
introduction and subsequent entry in the 1939 check list. Poor thing.>>

Poor thing, nothing! Little HONORABILE survived being blacklisted by AIS in
the 'twenties, and survives most everything else as well. It will outlive all
of us. And when it gets bored with surviving in one form, it changes into
another. Few, if any, irises have produced more sports. Other registered ones
are SHERWIN-WRIGHT (1915), a bright yellow self, SANS SOUCI (1854), and
KALEIDOSCOPE (1929) with spotted and splashed falls. JOSEPH'S COAT Kgot bored
itownself and pitched up a white and violet amoena sport in 1968. Most of the
sports have also re-sported. Never a dull moment with HONORABILE, which is
classified as a bona fide MTB by the Median Iris Society.

Come see a pretty picture: http://www.worldiris.com. Select the right hand
side of the entry screen, then go to "Quick Fix" and scroll on down until you
see the name.
