Well, actually Linda, no. You are coping with a different problem,
which is rot under snow. We don't get snow here (forget the 2+ feet in
'93), other than an occasional few inches. Some winters, no snow at
all. I didn't realize it back when I received the honorary title of Rot
Queen, but most of the rot I see on irises here is NOT soft rot. It's
just plain ol decomposition of dead tissue, killed by sudden drops in
temperature to the low 20sF or lower after long warm spells. Your
irises are staying much warmer under the snow blanket.
After saying all that, it may be that your irises got a hard freeze
before snow that took out the growing bud. Things to study next year.
