Randy, et. al.,
I grow HALFWAY TO HEAVEN and recommend it highly. For me, it is a
large, delightfully ruffled orchid pink. The beard is not entirely
blue - only at the end, the rest of the beard towards the throat is
tangerine. A lot of the blue bearded pinks share this trait of only
the end of the beard showing blue.
Dave Niswonger hybridized H T H and a lot of other 'blue bearded'
pinks. This iris one won an HM last year, so others have thought
highly of it, too. It is a very husky grower as well.
Another 'blue bearded' pink is SHIRLEY M. This is by Evelyn
Kegerise. Phil Williams of Rocky Top Gardens writes the following in
TALL TALK about S M. "S M is head and shoulders above all the other
'wanna be' blue-bearded pinks. It has good color contrast, well
formed flowers, surprisingly strong blue beards, good branching and
bud count ... and the bloom is heavy and dependable. Super plants."
I ordered S M last year and am hoping to verify Phil's description
when I see it bloom in my garden.
