Re: SHOW: Judging and ethics

From: DWiris@aol.com

Hi Linda,

Your question 1: Whether judges may enter shows they are judging depends upon
the rules in the show schedule. I know of a number of shows that permit
judges to enter, however, in any show that I am on the committee or chairman,
the schedule prohibits this. The shows that permit judges to enter say that
they can't get enough entries to have a good showing for the public otherwise.
And it makes it difficult to find judges willing to judge their shows.
Usually the judge steps back when one of his/her entries is being judged and
does not participate in the evaluation, but the other judges then know who
entered the specimen. Only under dire circumstances would I go along with
this. My husband and I did judge our own entries at a show once when the show
chairman had failed to get judges and most of the entries were ours. I
considered this a dire circumstance.

Your second question is harder to answer. The entries do look different when
placed on the show bench along with others of the same or similar varieties.
Therefore, the judge might not recognize your entries. However, it might be
viewed as objectionable by some of the local club members.

Dorothy Willott,
Who has to get two show schedules in for approval.
