SPKR: Chuck Chapman

From: Irisborer@aol.com

Today I attended a terrific program on hybridizing given by Canadian
hybridizer, Chuck Chapman. Chuck is just over the border from the WNY Iris
Society in Guelph, Ontario... where he works on mainly SDB's (although he has
some TDF talls too).

Chuck is probably best known for his everbloomer, FOREVER BLUE - and
interesting enough, Chuck claims there is no known rebloomer in it's
background. FOREVER blue, Chuck says, was in bloom from May till frost (not
on the same plant, but in the row). And we all remember the bouquet he
brought to last year's fall banquet.

Some other spectacular slides we saw included ERAMOSA SNOWBALL - dead white
SDB (not dead plant, that is.... maybe stark white is a better term). Great
domed form.

KLINGON PRINCESS, a product of CHUBBY CHEEKS breeding, is a wonderful
combination of lavender and yellow, which WILL find its way into the Guest
garden this year.

RUBY ERUPTION (another CHUBBY CHEEKS kid) is a wonderful ruby plic over
yellow.... very striking and that same great form.

CANADIAN STREAKER has variegated - tri-colored foliage!

Chuck's talk was on hybridizing and what genes are carried with what traits
and so on. Some of it was a wee bit over my head, but Chuck is a good speaker
and I would recommend him. Interesting..... he said for breeding streaky
foliage you have to put pollen on the streaked plant - the trait is not
carried in the pollen.

Anyone who would like his new catalog when it comes out, he tells me it's $2 -
redeemable on your first order.
