Re: Confessional and Must Haves

From: Sandy Ives <rives@home.com>

I'm the hubby.

I write the cheques (actually I get the money orders). I take it off my
clothing budget.

The actual outgoing to-date is 163.50CDN for some siberians. The
committed is an additional $180USD plus phyto and shipping (more
siberians and the Superstition intros). The requisition is another
$300USD or so. We don't have Aitken's catalogue yet and we haven't
visited our friend who has a Keppel order. All and all the damage in
actual plants will likely be over $600USD just for mail order (excluding
phytosanitary).

Generally Maureen puts together the initial list. She makes sure there
are SDB introductions in it (well done Perry) before she gives it over.
She also makes sure there are TBs in it - probably to make sure it's a
big cheque.

I put together the wish list. I also knock off one of her TDF TBs
before I write the cheque just to show I'm paying attention.

What do I put on my wish list? Stuff that I can send to Rusty
sometimes:-)

This year I'm asking for
a) '98 HM spurias,
b) '97 and '98 medians,
c) Recent introductions from hybridizers whose plants I haven't grown
yet (several of whom are on the list - shame on me),
d) Taylor's Louisianas (hey, they're tough, right),
e) And, in a whim that will be historical before I end this sentence,
'Chimera' (Zurbrigg '61). It will be the first historic IB I will have
ever purchased.

Mostly I favour medians because we don't have the space for a serious TB
planting. I would ask for I. perrieri if I thought I had a hope. I
would ask for I. versicolour if there was such a plant:-).

Where do we put them? Our property is half the size of the stately
Guest manor:-).. We dig the poorer performers and we often have some
winter kill. This year we will likely have to dig some good performers
and send them to Rusty, the Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa, and/or
the CIS plant sale. Depends who gets me their wish list first!

Regards,

Sandy Ives in Ottawa...where we are getting another couple of inches of
snow to cover the hole the four year old dug in the ice (and the iris
bed) on his way China. We'll see what Immortality is made of now!
