Breeding for Green Iris

From: Greer Holland <mindpath@flash.net>

Hello all,

Here are a few tidbits I found in my 1995 Pollen Dauber's Seminar
notes. Dave Niswonger was the guest hybridizer and the handout he
furnished is titled "NOTES ON IRIS HYBRIDIZING AND GENETICS PICKED UP
FROM HERE AND THERE ALONG WITH MY OWN OPINIONS". The handout is dated
April, 1960. Dave started hybridizing irises in 1953.

Greens usually have no pollen.

Green due to pumila coloring. Usually lost on first backcross to talls.

Got best green from two plic pink seedlings.

Usually greens will set seed, even with oncogelias.

It seems at the time, the elusive pink Amoena was the challenge Dave and
others took up. He has many references to Fay and Hall and suggests
that PINNACLE X PALOMINO should be a first step to a pink Amoena. But,
he writes in the margin, SUNSET SNOWS came along and the rest is
history.
