It's really a matter of assessing priorities. I live in a house that is a
four-room sharecroppers cottage with rotting sills, heat with a wood stove
and don't have kids (or a wife anymore). I used to stop at the bar for a
beer or two, munch some peanuts, play some darts. Figured out that I was
spending about $1,200 a year in bars, which we don't have in Tennessee,
except for social misfits who may rearrange your face. 

So when I spent about $1,200 for rhizomes and assorted stuff for my 2 acres
of arable land each of the last couple of years, instead of putting it on
my waist line, I considered it a good investment. Of course I'm not
counting in capital expense like the rear-tine roto tiller and the ridey
mower and bed edger.
