Yes, arilbred rhizomes are naturally smaller than those of TBs, and
arilbredmedians are smaller than their taller counterparts. The best
indicator I've found that they are "bloom-size" is the appearance of
increase buds. "Someday" I'll get some rhizome photos posted to my web
site....

This is a halfbred that traces back exclusively to C.G. White
introductions. I can't relate any personal experience with this one, but
it should prove interesting.
> COOL OASIS (Hager 81)
A nice halfbred I was using in my pastel lines -- stunning grown in partial
shade. The standards are described in the CL as light lavender-violet,
falls as mauve-purple with a small black signal and brown beard. Perhaps
it's the contrast between the standards and falls, but the standards
appeared to have a distinct blue cast. I used it with my blue lines, based
on appearance, and the buff, ivory, and pink carriers because of its
pedigree. The secret to success with Hager's ABs [as well as those of
some other hybridizers] is to divide the clump every year. I had it in a
bed that was to be left in place the second year and lost it.

Dark maroon/purple, with standards a bit lighter than the falls. Nicely
veined. It didn't acclimate well to southern New Mexico, although I've
heard it is stunning in more moderate climates.
> NIGHT LIGHT (Rich 75)
My hands-down favorite Rich introduction. Dark red-black with a bright
orange beard. Registered at 9", although it never grew that tall for me.
> NAOMI OF MARA (Fankhauser, 1990/91)
A quarterbred registered at 18". Described in the CL as a rich red-violet
with a brown beard on a blue-violet base. Sounds interesting, as the
blue-violet layer usually shows up on top in my seedling patch.
> XILLIA (Blythe, 1988/89)
Another quarterbred with median ancestry. Described as opalescent gray
with chartreuse overlays.
> SANDY DANDY (Danielson 84) as an extra.
Golden tan self with a maroon signal and a dull gold beard tipped brown.
This one has done extremely well for me. It's a fully fertile halfbred
that has given me some nice things, including POINT WELL TAKEN, whose photo
is already up on my web site.
