I do not exactly know how AIS divides the state as I am a new member. I have
noticed that people who have lived in California for several generations
seem to have different perceptions from newer arrivals. In general the
former group see California as divided North from South by a line running
through San Francisco. Newer folk -- and the press -- seem more and more to
think of Southern California ( at least vaguely) as South of the Pass,
especially the LA area and its particular culture. The area that we used to
think of as the Central Valley is
coming to be conceived a 'central California'.
My view may be simply the 'local view' on the subject.
