Our local chapter of Region 14 met Monday night and we reminisced about
the problems we used to have with iris purchased from such reputable
dealers as Schreiners and Cooley's. We are all in region 14 but the
growers are on the coast in humid, rainy areas and we are in an area
that is actually an arid desert. When we learned to put the iris where
it could dry out and shrivel before we planted it we had fantastic luck
with those same iris. We received lovely plump, enormous rhizomes and
it was hard to let them shrivel before planting but when we did they
were great. I wonder if the reverse would be true. If they receive the
smaller, drier rhizomes from us and planted them in fairly moist, well
drained sand before placing them in the garden to fend for themselves
would the rhizome be able to show them it would rot if not slowly
acclimated to the moist, rich soil in the wetter regions. Has anyone in
a humid climate tried such a thing? Perhaps starting, not with moist
sand, but with quite dry sand and gradually adding moisture.

Patti
Region 5+ where it is arid, sandy soil and very "big Al".
