Sounds good to me. I might even go further than that. The average gardener
is looking for certain colours and good garden performance, so I would
suggest awards for best-performers according to colour class. So here's the
challenge. You are recommending cultivars to the non-irisarian on a limited
budget who is putting together a low maintence garden. No colour scheme has
been put together yet, but there will likely be at least three different
drifts of colour. The gardener will need to cover different heights across
the garden, so I am including other beardeds. You can probably add
beardless to the list as well.
Here is my list.
White: Immortality, Robin Goodfellow (MTB)
Blue: Sapphire Hills, Babbling Brook, Blenheim Royal, Twist of Fate,
Consummation (MTB), Tu Tu Turquoise (SDB)
Pink: Vanity, Chinese Treasure, Peach Picotee, Sonja's Selah (BB),
Strawberry Cream (MDB)
Yellow: Surprise Orange (SDB) (I haven't grown enough yellows)
Orange: (these don't seem to grow for me, trying some medians now)
Red: Warrior King, War Chief
Brown: Kahneeta, Honey Glazed (IB), Gingerbread Man (SDB)
Blue or Purple Plicata: Stepping Out, Rare Edition (IB), Bold Print (IB)
Yellow/Brown Plicata: Patina
Other Plicata: Ominous Stranger
Bicolour: Syncopation, Tiger Butter
Other: (there must be something that doesn't fall into these classes)
