Talkers,
Soap box time. Usually, I save this topic until nearer bloom season, BUT I've
just realized that, on iris-talk, bloom season is a relevant topic SO . . .
Some people are more inclined to buy a new iris if it's received an HC;
however, there seem to be relatives few HC's awarded, with the exception of
the large growers like Schreiners. (My opinion.)
According to the NEW judge's training book, the HC Award is granted to each
seedling that receives five or more votes. (That's not a lot!) Each judge may
vote for a maximum of eight Tall Bearded's and three from other classes.
(Pages 23 & 24) A seedling in any of the established classifications is
eligible for the HC Award.
When you go to judge a show, ask if there are hybridizer's in the area whose
garden you can visit. Sometimes you know these things already, and some times
you don't. Please take a notebook & pen with you when enter a seedling patch.
Write down the name of the hybridizer, the number of the seedling, and some
particulars about the iris to jog your memory when you are filling out the
ballot.
My 2 cents worth . . . Betty Wilkerson in Bowling Green, KY . . . no longer a
judge, and almost no longer a hybridizer.
