Dear Bruce,
I was filled with distress when I saw your posting come up on Iris-Talk.
Moreso, I was truly amazed that Graeme would have written to you with such
news at this time.
The announcement of the ISA Dykes Medal HAS NOT been made formally at this
time. That would be the prime reason that nobody in Australia has "filled
you in".
The awarding of the ISA Dykes Medal is a matter between our Society and the
British Iris Society who so kindly provide the award to us.
At this time, the requisite procedures of detente, courtesy and
announcements have not been made including :
a) The ISA Dykes Medal award recommendation by the Dykes Medal
Competition Co-ordinator has not even been ratified at the AGM of our
Federal Executive.
b) The AGM of the ISA Federal Executive has not even taken place.
b) As such, the potential announcement has been kept "under wraps" until
this has occurred and wehave received formal notification from my
counterpart in the British Iris Society that they have consented to our
Society's recommendation. The details surrounding the matter is currently
only known to the ISA Federal Executive and the Dykes Medal Garden judges
themselves.
c) The general membership of our own Society are
not even aware of the awardee's name or the variety which we are proposing
to be honoured with the award.
d) The British Iris Society have not been formally approached by me, as
Federal President of the ISA to consider accepting our Society's
recommendation to them.
e) It is one of the few truly exciting "honours" of our Society's Federal
President to announce this to the world.
It is indeed a sad day when such an announcement has been made public in
such a an inappropriate manner when all of the procedures noted above have
not occured yet.
I feel sadness that such rules of courtesy, the sense of occasion, the
carefully-worded and well publicised Rules of our Competition and
international detente appear to have been given such little consideration.
The Federal Executive of the ISA, the members of our own Society and the
British Iris Society have, I believe, the right to be made aware of this
exciting announcement in due time and after due process has been carried
out. Sadly, none of these important considerations appear to have been
given at this time.
I would like to think that such an action will not occur again, and that
you all will feel some sadness that such a breach of protocol has occurred.
Heather Pryor
Federal President
Iris Society of Australia (ISA)
