I don't think you need to worry about the irises getting burned. A local iris
garden was the victim of a wildfire several years ago and it didn't hurt the
irises at all. Apparently even the ones in pots made it--the pots melted, but
the irises didn't seem to mind.
I also seem to remember hearing that some people used to (still do?) burn the
iris beds in the fall to clean them up and kill borers, etc. I don't have
time to check the archives now, but I think it might be in there.
