Donald:

Mutations (sports) are spontaneous events.  They may be induced by 
various factors.  Some of these factors could be environmental (i.e. 
sunlight).  Also certain chemicals are known to be mutagens.   As to what 
may have induced this particular sport could be anyones guess.
