There is also the possibility that Linda doesn't know what she's talking
about <g>.  The mental image in my memory of the signal patterns on
detached falls on my sofa didn't match the patterns I was seeing on the
few ragged blooms I was able to find yesterday.  These were similar to
the one Chuck Chapman posted, with a bit larger dark blue edge, but not
the distinct pattern in my memory.  So now we have to wait till next
year when they bloom again to compare.

It's not verna - I've seen verna at higher elevations in open woods and
both the growth habit and the habitat is very different from cristata.  

I will be sure to send you some if it turns out to be something
different.
