That way you hopefully get modern form seedlings which inherit some genetic
tendency for rebloom from both parents....of course, hybridizing is rarely
that simple. >>
Ann,
You did interpret my words correctly. I've seen some improvements using this
technique, and I do believe it has a lot of merit. I have been most
successful using Feedback and Immortality in this direction. These two are
considered everbloomers in some quarters and cross well with moderns to
create cycle rebloomers. (In my program.)
Although hybridizing, like most things in life, is not very simple, the
higher the percentage of a characteristic (rebloom, lace, color, etc.) you
use in a cross, the higher your chances of reproducing that trait in your
seedlings.
For instance: I crossed INFERNO (Schreiner's red that rebloomed in California
and tried to rebloom here once, but was too late) onto Monty's HER ROYAL
HIGHNESS which never rebloomed for me. I got several nice reds with form
somewhere between the two, but none rebloomed. One of these seedlings was
used as a pod parent and crossed by FEEDBACK to reinforce the rebloom. Did I
get a reblooming red? No! It's not quite that easy.
When I moved, I saved 1 seedling from the cross. And frankly I don't much
care for the color. It's much like XANTHRIPPE'S HALO as pictured on
Iris-photo earlier in the week. It has grayed purple standards and fall
ring. The falls open bright blue and fade to bluish purple. But guess what
reblooms! At least it did last fall. In my garden! It also has good form,
branching, and bud count. Red? No! Perfect? No! But I feel it supports
my theory.
Also, I have this theory that an iris will rebloom well in CA and similar
areas, if it reblooms here.
Betty in BG KY (USA--zone 6, I think), who will climb off the rebloom soap
box now.
