I counted more than 30 iris clumps out the more than 400
irises I grow. Two were LAs, one spuria clump, six arilbreds
with the rest being TBs and a few medians. Trying to figure
out what these may have had in common that the several beds
with no victims did not share, what I've come up with is that ALL
the victims get full sun all day long. Those beds receiving at
least some portion of shade during the day have so far escaped
the malady. Otherwise, the treatment varied. The bed with
rebloomers received quite a bit of extra water last summer and
fall. Not as many scorch victims, but still some. Some of the
TB beds with some arilbreds on the high side received some
doses of overhead watering as opposed to the soaker method
used in the rebloom beds, but not as often or as much. The
highest number of scorch victims were in these beds. The arilbreds
received some water early, but then it was basically withheld until
growth started last fall. One grandmother iris bed received zilch
extra water and had 3 victims. Two other grandmother beds also
received zilch water, but have considerable shade and there were
no victims. These latter two beds of grandmother irises grow in
a miserable spot of soil and are able to only anchor roots in the
top inch of soil at best. They are also subject to high nitrogen
fertilize running off the lawn on my sloping ground and it often
shows in the fan growth (they really do pretty well most of the time).
Any comments?
