Thanks to all who have replied so far. In the hope of getting more
detailed opinions I have some theories to present, please tear them apart :)
The gist was: a reselect has improved form but degraded branching or
vigor.
1) Repeat the original cross.
There must be some number where we reach diminishing returns. For a
cross of related Iris perhaps 50-100? is sufficient. For a wide cross
perhaps 200-300 ?
2) Outcross to 'unrelated' iris in same color with better vigor/branching.
This cross would seem to be MOST likely to solve the fault(s), but
LEAST likely to preserve the originally desired flower form.
3) Backcross to original parent(s) with better vigor/branching.
This option seems to be a safe compromise between 2) and 4), and
therefore the Best Option ?
4) Intercross with another sibling that shows best form/color with
vigor/branching.
This cross would seem to be MOST likely to preserve the desired
flower form, and also MOST likely to continue the fault(s)
5) Cross with best available iris (in color) with some similarity in
parentage.
This cross should return better results than 2), and be similar to
3)
