In Calif., clay pots get way too hot in the sun (iris pot roast). Plastic
pots are okay, wooden pots or "barrels" are excellent. Remember, iris can
grow 3-foot or longer roots so if the pots are too small they may get a bit
stunted. Make sure there is some drainage or aeration.
