Jim,
     Totally correct.  All true Irises here must be grown in pots or kiddie 
pools sunk into the ground.  African Irises do fine in the ground.  Even some 
of my Daylilies are having to go into pots.  The ground becomes powdery and 
hydrophobic, and the plants start dwindling away.
