Walter, I have been judging iris for a relatively few years and have judged
with a few folks who fit the above description. The first show or two that I
judged I was less lenient than I am now. I always keep in mind that there
needs to be a balance between encouraging exhibitors and showing the visiting
public what a well grown iris stalk should look like. Notice I said "iris
stalk". I firmly believe that there is often a big difference in an iris
that makes a grand showing on the exhibition bench and one that is a great
garden iris!
I bred and showed dogs for more than twenty years and there are lots of
"faultfinder" judges in that game, believe me. Fortunately, over all, I have
found the iris judges that I have met, and iris folks in general, to be some
of the finest people around. I hope that the members of your club won't be
too discouraged and won't allow one bad experience to dampen their enthusiasm
for our beloved flower or for the fellowship we enjoy within our iris
societies.
